HEALTH AND TESTING at CALARYN

Larry and I are firmly dedicated to the health of our dogs and the puppies they produce and are very proud of our excellent health record.

Each year scientific research brings the canine world new advancements in veterinary medicine.  We continually study and research to stay educated on these advancements.  Taking advantage of new testing and studies is key to ensuring the health and quality of our dogs' lives and is crucial in eliminating heriditary disease.  As breeders, it is our ultimate responsibility to ensure the longeviity of our chosen breeds.  Following are some of our health protocols.

MMI Genomics - DNA

CALARYN'S Sires and Dams are DNA certified by MMI Genomics

The Canine DNA Parentage Test is used to determine parents of dogs. Breeders and owners of dogs use this test to ensure accuracy of breeding records, confirm and guarantee pedigrees and protect breed integrity. MMI Genomics, Inc. is the most experienced laboratory in the world for canine DNA identification and parentage testing services. This accurate and reliable test uses state-of-the-art DNA technology, allowing canine genetic identity to be certified with a confidence of greater than 99.9%.

MMI Genomics has worked with canine registry organizations, both large and small, to establish and build DNA testing programs to fulfill each of their needs. MMI Genomics is the principal service provider for the American Kennel Club and the United Kennel Club.

Benefits of DNA Certified Pedigrees

· A permanent and tamperproof record of identity

· Enhance value of your dogs through the highest possible standard of documenting pedigrees

· Establish DNA pedigrees for use in long-term genetic improvement programs

· Independent verification of out-of-sight mating and artificial insemination to eliminate parentage concerns

· Standardized database allows comparison without re-testing

Orthopedic Foundation for Animals - OFA

CALARYN'S Sires and Dams are certified by the OFA to be free of patellar luxation.

The OFA databases are core to the organization’s objective of establishing control programs to lower the incidence of inherited disease. The OFA databases serve all breeds of dogs and cats, and provide breeders a means to respond to the challenge of improving the genetic health of their breed through better breeding practices.

The testing methodology and the criteria for evaluating the test results for each database were independently established by veterinary scientists from their respective specialty areas, and the standards used are generally accepted throughout the world.

Canine Eye Registration Foundation - CERF

All of our Sires and Dams have annual CERF exams and are certified free of heritable eye disease.

The CERF Registry not only registers those dog's certified free of heritable eye disease by members of the American College of Veterinary Ophthalmologists (A.C.V.O. ), but also collects data on all dogs examined by A.C.V.O. Diplomates. This data is used to form the CERF data base which is useful in researching trends in eye disease and breed susceptibility. Not only is this data useful to clinicians and students of ophthalmology, but to interested breed clubs and individual breeders and owners of specific breeds.

Well Puppy Exams

Calaryn's puppies receive comprehensive well puppy exams and a Well Puppy Health Letter signed by our vet.

HEALTH CERTIFICATE:
We work very closely with our local veterinarian, Dr. Irwin with Minter Animal Clinic. He does a complete exam on every one of our puppies soon after birth and again before they leave to go to their new family. At this visit, Dr. Irwin signs a “Health Certificate” stating that he feels our puppies are healthy and free of infectious disease.

Many critical areas are checked and evaluated during this puppy exam such as: heart, lungs, eyes, ears, bite, throat, abdomen, flexion of hips and patellar luxation as well as overall skin, coat and body condition. Each puppy’s temperature is taken and the puppy is checked for external parasites such as fleas, ticks and ear mites. We can say, with 100% certainty, that every one of our puppies have passed their Puppy Exam with flying colors!

Because, we never know when one of our puppies is going to be adopted, we pride ourselves on raising every one of them like they are staying forever. The puppy that you receive will be healthy, happy and well socialized. We appreciate your considering one of ours to be one of yours, and if your questions have not been answered in this website, give us a call and we would be happy to visit with you.
